song writing for losers

im really weary about posting a song of my own because i dont think its a great song and i also kinda hate it but i need to, so here's a song that i wrote thats untitled because i cant come up with song titles.

d, gm

were just messing around, nothing more
weve done this, a couple of times before
i told myself, he wont get in my head
hes in my head

why do you make me cry
even though i know that youre not someone to love
i just cant stay away
baby its in my blood
plus i think i might love you
i have to block you
because youll never say "i love you too"

you dont love me
you only wanna kiss me
you clearly
just want my touch and not my love
but i guess thats okay
just another day
of having a constant lump in my throat

why do you make me cry
even though i know that youre not someone to love
i just cant stay away baby its in my blood
plus i think i might love you
i have to block you
because youll never say "i love you too"
dont say you love me
its not true
i know im only one thing to you
dont say you love me
its not true
i know im only one thing to you
dont say you love me
its not true
i know im only one thing to you
dont say you love me
its not true
i know im only one thing to you

so as you can tell, this is full of cliches, but honestly some of the best songs are full cliches. this song is about the classic "i love you but you dont love me back." which is probably one of the most overused song ideas in the world, but its easy to rhyme things with i love you so is was fairly easy to write this song. it took me about a week or so to write, but normally it takes at least two months to finish a song. theres even some songs i started a year ago and i havent been able to finish them because i cant think of the next line or verse. once you get the chorus of a song down, its pretty easy to figure out the verses, and the bridge is even easier, since its just a short part that takes out the repetitiveness of the song, and normally for the bridge, you can use the same chords, or you can switch up the order of the chords.

coming up with ideas for songs is kind of hard, for me at least. as a teenager, i have a lot going on in my life, but nothing exciting enough or something that hasnt already been done. something i took from a favorite artist of mine, Marina and the diamonds, is to come up with a character to write a song about. her entire album, Electric Heart, is based of a character that she came up with. thats what this song is based off of, its from a book i read recently.

in order to write good lyrics, you need some rhymes. one of the most helpful things is just looking up "words that rhyme with ____". theres a website called rhymezone thats super helpful when it comes to this. you also should be able to keep the lyrics relevant to each other. basically just dont start writing about a love song and then throw in lines about how much you love to drink water.
my song writing folder in my notes
(i dont have that many right now
because the rest of songs are on my old phone)

so this is the end of my blog. maybe in the future ill post some more in the future but im done for the time being. i learned a lot from writing this blog. ive learned that im really bad at explaining things, and also im very bad at trying to write in my own voice. but i also learned how to properly make and maintain a blog, which could actually be helpful in the future. by commenting on other peoples blogs has made me realize how different everybody is and how different everybodys writing style is, which is really interesting to see. blog are important because its an easy, free (depending on the website) and fun way to share your thoughts, spread the word, or teach people things.

until next time :))

i use a piano/keyboard or ukulele to write the chords to my songs, but the ukulele is a little more confusing to explain the chords and tabs to, so im going to use piano chords to teach you how to make a chord progression for your song.
im not a very good at teaching anything, so this is assuming you already know how to play piano, or at least have an understanding of the notes and keys. if you dont know how to play or want to know which keys are which, there are lots of youtube videos online to teach you, such as learn piano keys and notes - piano keyboard diagrams by piano keyboard guide. another really helpful website is pianochord.org.
a lot of people teach chord progressions in roman numerals, but my personal preference is to just say the chord name ( i.e. c, dm, bb, etc. ). i picked up using chords from using a website called megachords, but its since closed down, so now i use an app called Ultimate Guitar: Chords & Tabs. unfortunately it doesnt have piano chords on it, but there are websites where they have the piano chords for the songs (e-chords.com, 8notes.com, zebrakeys.com)
something important to remember is your finger position. with your right hand, your thumb is finger one, pointer is two, middle is three, ring is four, and pinkie is five. with your left hand (if you plan on playing the melody while playing the chords you'll be using your left hand to play the chords) its the opposite, so your pinkie being one, ring being two, middle being three again, pointer being four, and thumb being five. when you play 3 note chords, you will use your first, second, and third fingers, no matter which hand you use.

now onto the actual chords, there's a lot of options. here's list of all the chords you should know and remember.

  •   c (c, e, g)
  • cm (c, d#, g)
  • c# (c#, f, g#)
  • c#m (c#, e, g#)
  • d (d, f#, a)
  • dm (d, f, a)
  • e (e, g#, b)
  • em (e, g, b)
  • e# (e#, g, a#)
  • e#m (e#, f#, a#)
  • f (f, a, c)
  • fm (f, g#, c)
  • f# (f#, a#. c#)
  • f#m (f#, a, c#)
  • g (g, b, a)
  • gm (g, a#, d)
  • g# (g#, c, d#)
  • g#m (g#, b, d#)
  • a (a, c#, e)
  • am (a, c, e)
  • a# (a#, c, d#)
  • a#m (a#, b, d#)
  • b (b, d#, f#)
  • bm (b, d, f#)
  • bb (a#, c#, f)
with all that being said, have fun coming up with different chord progressions to start making the music for your song!

(for the time being, i think some of them might be incorrect, but i am going to be editing as soon as i can! sorry for the inconvenience!)

who am i?

i have to make this blog for a mass communications class i'm taking, not that i don't want to do it though. i've always wanted to start a blog but i never knew what to make it about or had the motivation to maintain it, but now i kind of don't have a choice.
the blog idea is kind of stupid because honestly how many posts can i make about how to write a song? the answer? not many.
i decided to choose this idea for a blog because i like to write songs, and some of the biggest helps with learning how to was blogs and articles on advice on how to write a decent song. now i've only written a couple songs, and at least one of them is a joke song, but the other three are real. i'd share them but their all pretty personal and since people from school will see this i'd rather not.
we have to have three posts in total, including this post, but i have an idea for a fourth so i might do that, but the topics i'll 100% be covering are:

 - basic chord progressions for different genres of songs
 - topics to write songs about
 - the cliches to avoid when songwriting

maybe i'll end up continuing this blog after this unit is over in class, but who knows?

to introduce myself, my name is emma cox. i'm a sophomore at a highschool in iowa. im 15, and of course, i love writing songs and making music. i've been singing for as long as i can remember and since i was very young i wanted to be a musician when i grew up, and while that's still a goal of mine, i plan on going to school become a therapist.

i have naturally brown hair, but i've dyed it all different colors, the main one i always go back to being any shade of red. i have bluish grey eyes and i wear glasses. i wear a lot of black but i try to branch out and wear different colors. i also have my nose pierced and am currently wearing a black hoop.

i have a best friend named miranda who i call merda, and we hang at least two times a week. shes really funny and i've been going to church with her lately, which is really fun.

i have a dog named leia, who is a pomeranian/ mini poodle mix, but we call her lil bit most of the time, and then we have a cat named simba, who isnt technically our cat. hes my oldest brother's cat, but we've had him for a two years or so since he cant have him where he lives because he has too many animals already. he's an american curl. we're also in the process of adopting a new dog, who we haven't given a name too yet. she is an anatolian shepard/ great pyrenees mix.

speaking of siblings, i have two brothers. christian, who is 23 and lives out of the house, and then dolan, who is 17 and still lives at home with us. then i also have a soon to be sister-in-law, genevieve, who is engaged to christian, but she's basically already family to us.

and finally, that's the end of my first post. there's most definitely something i'm forgetting but this post is way longer than it needed to be, so this is it. i hope you like my mediocre blog posts coming soon!
